Abolished (in development)
Six Indigenous representative bodies.
Fifty years.
One recurring pattern.
Abolished is currently in development with the support of Screen NSW building on early development through AIDC's Indigenous creators pitch.
Abolished is an investigative, presenter-led First Nations political documentary and podcast examining the repeated creation - and abolition - of Indigenous representative bodies by the Australian Federal Government since the 1967 referendum.
Over more than fifty years, six national Indigenous advisory bodies have been established, only to be dismantled when governments change. The project investigates this pattern to ask what it reveals about Australia’s commitment to First Nations self-determination and meaningful political representation.
Through interviews, archival material, and historical analysis, Abolished explores why these bodies were formed, why they were dismantled, and the long-term consequences for Indigenous communities. The series places contemporary debates within a broader historical context, creating space to reflect on policy failure, reconciliation, and the future of Indigenous representation.
